NATURAL HISTORY
Lupinus perennisThe lupine native to eastern North America. It is rare in New England as the invasive Western Lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) displaces it.
The sundial lupine is the sole host plant to the endangered Karner Blue butterfly and grows ably in tough conditions.
The genus name derives from the latin word for wolf, lupus, because of the previous belief that lupines deplete or "wolf" soil nutrients. But the opposite is true: it is a member of the legume family and improves the soil around where it grows through nitrogen fixation.
Beautiful sky blue flowers bloom in June. Late in the season the seedpods explode once ripe.
