Golden Alexander is native to the eastern United States and grows in sunny, wet meadows and floodplains. The yellow blossoms attract many insects. 

It is the host plant for swallowtail caterpillars. Swallowtail butterflies lay their eggs on Golden Alexander and the caterpillars begin their lives feeding on the leaves of the plant when they emerge.
