NATURAL HISTORY
Asclepias syriacaCommon milkweed is native to North America and an important species to pollinators. The genus name, Asclepias, commemorates Asklepios, the Greek god of medicine because many plants in the milkweed family have been used for medicinal purposes over time. Milkweed loves sun and does well in areas that have been previously disturbed. It is often seen along roadsides and fence rows as well as in prairies and pastures. Milkweed leaves are the primary food source of monarch caterpillars. Compounds present in milkweed plants, cardiac glycosides, make monarch larvae and adult butterflies toxic to birds and deter predation.
