This shell is cast from an especially tiny blue mussel shell found on the coastline of Maine.
NATURAL HISTORY
Mytilus edulisThe blue or common mussel is a marine mollusc that is found in the intertidal zone in both hemispheres of the Atlantic and the North Pacific. They attach to rock and other hard substrates using strong byssal threads. They are preyed upon by sea stars and crabs but in the presence of predators they are able to thicken their shells as a defense mechanism.
