NATURAL HISTORY
Chamaecrista fasciculataPartridge pea is an annual wildflower native to the Eastern United States. It is a legume and fixes nitrogen in the soil wherever it grows. The yellow blooms are loved by pollinators and birds feed on the seed pods later in the season.
It grows abundantly in areas that have been disturbed. In gardens it is a beautiful plant for early successional sowing while slower growing perennials become established.
Partridge pea is the host plant to the Orange Sulphur, Sleepy Orange, and Little Yellow butterflies. The butterflies lay their eggs on partridge pea and it will be the food the caterpillars rely on.
