NATURAL HISTORY
Littorina littoreaThe common periwinkle is a small whelk, or sea snail, native to the European coasts of the Northern Atlantic ocean. It was introduced to North America by ships in the 1800s and is now found along the North-Eastern Atlantic coast.
Shells of a different species, Nassarius gibbosulus, are thought to be the first jewelry ever made: shell beads found in Israel and Algeria whose holes appear deliberately created and that show evidence of wear patterns on their surface. These beads have been dated back to roughly 100,000 years ago.
