An exact casting of a black swallowtail chrysalis from my sister's garden. She watched the caterpillar and gave me the empty chrysalis once he had emerged.

NATURAL HISTORY

Papilio polyxenes

The eastern black swallowtail is found across North American. The female seeks out plants in the carrot family, Apiaceae, to lay eggs on. This particular caterpillar munched his way through an entire dill plant. Other host plants include angelicas, parsnips, magnolias, and queen anne's lace. Black swallowtails prefer open sites and can be found in fields, meadows, and parks.

METAPHOR

Transformation and protection. The feeling of stillness and noticing, smelling the scent of fresh herbs.
  • chrysalis is approximately .79 x .31 inches | 20 x 8 mm
  • 1.5 mm sterling silver cable chain with lobster clasp
  • available chain length: 32 inches | 81.3 centimeters

A note about plating: Thicket jewelry is intentionally crafted from solid fine metal for quality and longevity. The only place you will find plating is on interior hollows, like in this piece, that are protected from wear and will stand the test of time.

About the Process

Each piece of Thicket jewelry begins with taking a mold of a found or foraged natural object. This mold is used in the process of lost wax casting to create a perfect replica, in solid fine metal, of the original natural object.

A note from Rebecca

Why metaphor?

Jewelry is not only adornment - it is symbolism. Jewelry can be a talisman, a reminder, a covenant, a spell.

Humans have been ascribing meaning to the natural world for a very long time. In selecting natural objects to cast I think not only about the form and aesthetics but also the valences of meaning the object holds and I include these in the description of each Thicket piece. Each of these metaphors is a beginning, waiting for you to layer your own meanings and stories onto.
